Introduction to Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Winston-Salem is the fifth largest city in North Carolina and has a diverse business base including nanotechnology research, finance, medicine and manufacturing. The Twin City is home to many corporate headquarters including Krispy Kreme, Reynolds America, Hanesbrands and TW Garner Food Company (makers of Texas Pete).
Winston-Salem’s history as the Twin City goes back to the 1700s. Salem was settled by Moravians in 1753. A devout, religious group known as craftsmen and artisans creating pottery, tannery, iron works, cloth and furniture, established Salem as a trade center. Old Salem, a living history museum, is a restoration of the Moravian community where today visitors can see people working as they did over 200 years ago. Winston was established in 1851 by Major Joseph Winston as an industrial center. The two cities merged in 1913 forming what is now Winston-Salem.
Winston-Salem, nicknamed the city of Arts and Innovation, has a history of many “firsts”. The North Carolina School of the Arts was the first state-supported arts conservatory in the country. The first Arts Council in the United States was formed in Winston-Salem and provided a model for Arts Councils nationwide who support the arts. Travelers enjoy the numerous galleries, performing arts theaters and a wide variety of musical talent.
Winston-Salem is home to six colleges and universities including Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem State University and Salem College, the oldest, continuously running women’s college in the U.S.
